PROJECT DIRECTOR, MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES
Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs*), a nonprofit research and development consortium, is dedicated to helping its cable operator members integrate new cable telecommunications technologies into their business objectives.
As Project Director, Mobile Technologies, you will provide technical leadership for the application of 3rd generation cellular and mobility technologies to cable operator networks. Responsibilities include working with cable operators, vendors, and staff in the development of a technical plan for enhancing cable operator services with mobility technologies, translation of the plan into functional requirements and a conceptual architecture, project planning, and specification writing. You will manage technical development projects, including internal CableLabs staff liaisons and interactions with member companies and vendors. This position will require participation in standards activities and presenting contributions on issues of interest to the cable industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Serve as SME for 3rd generation cellular and mobility technologies and applications. Educate the cable operator community regarding existing and planned cellular/mobile network and handset technologies, likely direction and timeline for cellular network evolution, including integration with IP-based services and technologies, and trends in mobile application development and deployment.
*Work with Cellular Systems, Multimedia Applications, Strategic Assessment teams on the development and promotion of a technical plan for enhancing cable operator services with cellular/mobility technologies and applications. Develop functional requirements, a conceptual architecture, and a project plan for developing the necessary interface specs.
*Manage specification development projects, make written contributions, assist in the management of conference calls, review and assess vendor written contributions, prepare presentations summarizing technical work.
*Prepare detailed written reports and presentations summarizing relevant technical work of consortiums and standards bodies related to cellular technologies (CDMA, 3GPP and its IMS subsystem architecture, 3GPP2, OMA, UMA, IEEE, and IETF), next generation wireless IP architectures (SIP and its current and future use within the wireless industry). Identify key technologies and components that would have value to PacketCable architecture. Identify strategic opportunities for cable contributions and represent the industry’s position at standards committee meetings.
*Act as staff liaison to CableLabs and external industry initiatives with respect to cellular/wireless technologies. Participate in the dissemination of the strategy, progress, and results of the architecture to the general public via presentations at industry events.
*Coordinate activities with other subject matter experts and project managers within the PacketCable project and among other CableLabs departments.
*Develop relationships with key vendor and member representatives to assist in meeting these objectives.
REQUIREMENTS:
*MS or equivalent in engineering or computer science required (BSCS, BSEE, or MSCE/MSEE).
*Extensive industry experience (cellular carrier experience preferred) in designing mobile network architectures and applications.
*Strong knowledge of OMA, 3GPP, 3GPP2, IMS, and other standards related to the evolution of IP in cellular networks.
*In-depth knowledge of VoIP networks and architectures required.
*Previous experiences as a system architect or system design engineer with cellular or IP telephony architectures and protocols is required.
*Working knowledge of the following network protocols:
oMobile technologies: GSM-CDMA (architecture, signaling, and back-office); OMA, UMA, 3GPP/3GPP2, IMS, IEEE 802.1X family of standards (802.11a/b/g/e, 802.16)
oIETF SIP
*Some working knowledge of cable systems architecture, PacketCable architecture and VoIP protocols, network operations, and administration is desirable.
*Requires a strong self-starter/quick study in the areas of
protocols and network related technologies.
*Strong communication and presentation skills, including the ability to both explain complex technical material in simple terms and thoroughly document technical requirements in writing.
*Must be willing to travel up to 35%.
