Top 5 cities in the US to work for the cell phone industry
By Britney Baker
The US is considered the harbinger of the mobile phone industry, and supports the most number of cell phone users in the world. There are basically four major players in the cell phone market in the United States, and they are undoubtedly the best places to work for, if you are in the cell phone industry.
1. San Francisco Bay Area, California
Known to many people as Silicon Valley, this city has been in the tech market since the 1970s owing to the rise of a number of companies working on silicon microchip development. This is considered to be the gold standard of all American cities, and one of the richest and most sophisticated cities in the world. This area is home to the headquarters of big shots in the cell phone industry like Sony, Sony Ericsson, Fairchild Semiconductors and a myriad other electronics companies.
2. Atlanta, Georgia
Home to the previously called Cingular Wireless, which has been re-established as AT&T, America’s largest cell phone service provider, it doesn’t have to be explained why Atlanta is a good place for people in the cell phone industry. The proof of Atlanta’s technological advancement is the landscape of high-rise and mid-rise buildings dotting the horizon.
3. Basking Ridge, New Jersey
On first sight, this may seem to be a desolate unincorporated area in New Jersey, but look closer and you’ll find that it houses the second largest wireless network service provider in the whole country – Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon USA and Vodafone Britain. This quaint little city has several parks, gardens, historical sites, and a big multinational company which seems to be out of place, but totally worth it if you’re in the cell phone industry.
4. Overland Park, Kansas
Aside from being the 5th in the 100 best cities to live in the United States, this has a special interest to the electronics industry because the headquarters of Sprint Nextel is present here. This satellite city of Kansas is not just home to sprawling parks and landscape, but a boon to the cell phone market. Sprint Nextel stands 3rd in line of all cell phone service providers in the country.
5. Seattle, Washington
This city is famous for the first offices of Bill Gates’ Microsoft, and after a couple of decades, it’s not alone. Seattle is famous for its technology and of course, its string of coffee shops. The country’s 4th largest cell phone service provider, T-Mobile, has its base in Seattle. Owing to its technological advancements, almost the entire city is covered by a wireless internet network too. Electronics engineers can aspire to work in Seattle, and enjoy working while sipping on coffee from Starbucks.
